Velké Pavlovice - Land of no shadows

Welcome to the “land of no shadows”, as the local inhabitants have aptly dubbed this region, which has been used for agriculture since time immemorial. The knolls of this blessed area change their colours throughout the year as if by the hand of a master painter. Spring gives it every shade of green, then with the coming of summer the orchards turn orange with apricots and fields are awash with the yellow and black of sunflowers and in the autumn all the slopes are warmed by a palette of yellow, green, brown and orange from grape leaves.

From almost any spot you will see at least five church spires in the surrounding villages. Most popular with cyclists is the northern area, called Modré hory (Blue Mountains). In the words of a poet, it was described as “a palm with five fingers spread out in the landscape.” These five imaginary fingers represent five winemaking villages of great renown. Be sure to sample their excellent wines, especially the reds. You will definitely want to learn how to pronounce the names of these villages correctly: Velké Pavlovice, Němčičky, Bořetice, Vrbice and Kobylí. Here, they are known by almost every schoolchild. The Velké Pavlovice area is at the heart of red wine production for all of Moravia. The ideal contour of the terrain, the soil conditions and a very favourable microclimate allow the ripening of Blauer Portugieser (Modrý Portugal), Blaufränkisch (Frankovka) and also the varieties Zweigelt (Zweigeltrebe) and Dornfelder. You may also be surprised by the velvety Merlots. Among white varieties that thrive here are Pinot and lighter aromatic Gewürztraminer (Tramín) along with the locally cultivated Pálava and Moravian Muscat (Muškat Moravský). If you don’t mind tasting wine in the modern halls of a medium-sized winery (producing around 100,000 bottles annually), you certainly shouldn’t miss the largest wine-growing town, Velké Bílovice. Cellars can be found just outside the village. You’ll find more than 600 of them in a network of adjacent streets.

Interesting thing

The Republic of Kraví hora (meaning Cow Mountain, derived from the name of the hill above the local wine cellars) is a microstate within a state, established by an association of winemakers in Bořetice. Since the beginning of the 21st century, it has been setting up its own state structures, including the offices of president, prime minister and cabinet ministers. It has its own embassy, and together with a similarly established microstate of distillers it even signed a nonaggression pact. You can become an honorary citizen, get a passport, and pay using their own currency – the kravihorec. The local cellars line up along two long streets, Horní and Dolní (Upper and Lower) Frejd. There is also a square with a statue of wine yeast. “No one looks after us as well as wine yeast does”, says the honorary president. The government also established a public holiday on the last Saturday in May. It is celebrated with the hoisting of the state flag and the opening of all the cellars. Bořetice benefits from its well-developed tourism services and popularity.

Another circuit beginning in Lednice is a route that leads through a landscape that is one of the warmest and sunniest parts of the Czech Republic. In the local vineyards around Velké Pavlovice, red wines thrive in particular. Velké Bílovice, Vrbice, Bořetice, Velké Pavlovice and Rakvice – these are the places along the route where you can sample these superb reds. Starting in Lednice, head along the road marked 422 to Podivín, where you will connect with the Velké Pavlovice Wine Trail. It’s marked with a stylized light blue arch representing a wine-cellar entrance on the yellow sign indicating a cycle route. For a short distance you climb out of Velké Bílovice, from which a quiet road ascends directly between vineyards to the village of Vrbice. Along the way you’ll enjoy splendid views of seemingly endless vineyards. In Vrbice turn left, and after a pleasant downhill ride you’ll arrive in Bořetice. Although it’s uphill again to the lookout tower Slunečná, the short ascent is not too challenging. And the views are truly worth it! In this area, red wines are exceptionally successful, especially the Blaufränkisch (Frankovka) and Saint Laurent (Svatovavřinecké) varieties. From nearby Velké Pavlovice it’s a relaxed 5-kilometre stretch on flat or slightly downhill roadway to Rakvice. In Rakvice you connect up again with the Velké Pavlovice Wine Trail, which will take you to the Chateau Pond just outside Lednice.

Common Tips

Try the local variety André, developed in Velké Pavlovice by crossing Blaufränkisch (Frankovka) and Saint Laurent (Svatovavřinecké) varieties. With its dark garnet-red colour, aromatic scent and richness, it is reminiscent of southern-style wines. It is an excellent complement to full-fat hard cheeses as well as to red and smoked meats. It is named after the French educator and naturalist Christian Carl André, who at the turn of the 19th century in Brno founded the world’s first association for the cultivation of fruit and thereby sparked interest in developing new varieties through cross-breeding.

Lednice-Valtice Complex

There are not many places in the world which have received such care as the elegant area around the spectacular Lednice and Valtice chateaux. An absolutely unique park has been created here over the centuries, full of rare tree species, romantic little buildings, fishponds and beautiful little corners. The Lednice-Valtice Complex, which has been included in the UNESCO list, is known as the Garden of Europe to this very day.

Velké Bílovice

If you are keen on learning about wine on your travels, it is inconceivable to miss a visit to Velké Bílovice, which is a mecca of wine tourism and is the largest wine-growing town in the country.

Bořetice

Just over the “border” of the Free Federal Republic of Kraví hora (meaning Cow Mountain) is a lookout tower located on Olbramy hill between the villages of Bořetice and Němčičky.

Velké Pavlovice

The ancient cellar lanes seen in many south Moravian winemaking villages are nowhere to be found in Velké Pavlovice. There is, however, a completely modern one, consisting of 15 colourful little houses equipped with archiving cellars.

Rakvice

On the former Amber Route and at the edge of the Dyje (Thaya) floodplain lies a subregion of the important winemaking centre of Velké Pavlovice – Rakvice, with its large expanses of vineyards. The vineyards spread across an undulating landscape that provides the ideal conditions for the ripening of mainly white varieties. Of renown is the Veltliner (Veltlínské zelené) from Rakvice with its fine linden aroma, and the local Chardonnay, to which the local microclimate lends the aroma and taste of tropical fruit, is also gaining acclaim.

Springer Winery

SPRINGER Winemakers possess vineyards in two locations – Čtvrtě and Skale – with a total area of 5 hectares and 24,000 grapevines. We are members of the Integrated Wine and Grape Production System. The aim of this system is to minimize the use of protective chemicals for the treatment of vineyards and to use environmentally-friendly agents instead.
