Podluží - The painted landscape

Peaceful landscape full of wineyards on the boarders with Slovakia rightly deserves its nickname “painted landscape”. It deserves the name because of the brightly coloured ornamentation and floral motifs with which the skilful local residents have decorated the façades of wine cellars and the sleeves of folk costumes. Such designs also appeared on period furnishing and on kraslice – eggs richly decorated with filigree and symbolizing spring and Easter.

Title
The character of the region is reflected in its name – Podluží. It refers to a floodplain landscape – lowlands in a shallow valley of a great river. And indeed, the eastern border of Moravia, which at the same time is the border of the Czech Republic with Slovakia, is created by the largest Moravian river, the Morava. It flows from north to south and after about 100 km empties into the mighty Danube. Almost symbolically, the Podluží Wine Trail has the shape of a ribbon tied upon this picturesque corner of the country. Its knot in Moravská Nová Ves, the heart of the local wine country, divides it into northern and southern circuits. The routes lead through a landscape which in early summer blazes bright yellow with expanses of oilseed rape and is dotted with villages proud of their wineries and their rich history. In the 9th to 11th centuries this was the site of the first Slavic empire – Great Moravia – which handed down not only a legacy of “state-building” but also many archaeological remains. The local wine region is known as the “kingdom of small wineries.” What is lacking in the size of the vineyards the winemakers make up for with the number of varieties. All the vintners like to experiment, so even in a small cellar you’ll often see 20 barrels and glass demijohns side by side, each glittering with a different type of wine. The local loess soil and sand are beneficial to white varieties including Chardonnay and aromatic Moravian Muscat (Muškát Moravský). The local climate is tailor-made for the hybrid variety Cabernet Moravia.

Interesting thing

At the southernmost tip of Moravia, the skilled hands of local folk artists have adorned the window and door frames of their houses, wine cellars and chapels with charming decoration. A painted entrance to one’s house was the proud calling card of every homemaker. And just as it is possible to recognize someone’s native region by their folk dress, it is the same with painted ornamentation. It differs from region to region and village to village, but the motifs are always derived from nature. The entrances of houses and cellars are usually decorated with Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia) roses and other flowers, twigs, leaves, grapes, hearts and birds, but you’ll also see purely decorative patterns, such as wavy lines and “bows”, on the sides of the doors. Creating the ornaments is not easy, and every locale has its own traditions and established rules that the painter should follow. While in one village you will notice bright, cheerful, delicate motifs, other locales pride themselves on big, boisterous ornamentation rendered in darker colours with a profusion of foliage. For most motifs there are special templates, but experienced painters can do it without such an aid. The richness and variety of patterns is inexhaustible, depending only on the taste and skill of each painter, and although only four basic colours are traditionally used (red, yellow, green, blue), each painting is unique.

This easy-going trail, suitable even for less experienced cyclists, takes you through the picturesque and romantic landscape around the river Dyje (Thaya) from Lednice all the way to the South Moravian city of Břeclav. The relaxed ride begins at the famous gardens of the Lednice Chateau. A long alley of trees leads you down a paved road to the Hunting Lodge – a Neoclassical building with Tuscan columns built in 1811. From here it is only a short jaunt to John’s Castle (Janův Hrad), another legacy of the powerful House of Liechtenstein. But save a visit to John’s Castle for the return journey and continue farther and deeper into the floodplain forests between blind channels of the river Dyje. After about 7kilometres following the Lužní les (Floodplain Forest) nature trail on paved bike route No. 41, turn right after passing the forester’s lodge and soon you will join up with the orange-marked Podluží Wine Trail. Ride this trail down to Charvátská Nová Ves and along quiet streets take the back way up to the Church of the Visitation in Poštorná. Well-placed signs will guide you there. At the church you will exit the Podluží Trail and cycle along route No. 42 south to the border with Austria. Along the way you will pass small bunkers that are a reminder of wartime events. At the crossroads Nad Německými loukami (Above the German Meadows) turn left and follow the state border along a paved military road, which soon turns left again, and you will find yourself on the site of the former Slavic fortified settlement of Veligrad, where you can breathe in history that is much older than the war. Near the settlement the Liechtensteins had an Empire-style chateau built, which now houses an exhibition on the archaeological exploration of the adjacent settlement. After a stop at Pohansko you only have 4–5 km left until you reach the centre of Břeclav. A short stretch along the river Dyje is the only unpaved section of this route. After a well-earned rest and tour of Břeclav, we recommend that you board a boat that will transport you and your bike from Břeclav back to John’s Castle. Another way to get back to John’s Castle is via a dirt road that runs along the left bank of the Dyje.

Common Tips

Taste the unique variety Cabernet Moravia, which was created by crossing Zweigelt and Cabernet Franc grapes. It is the first variety of the Cabernet type bred in the Czech Republic and is one of the best Moravian reds. Typical wines are dark garnet, soft and velvety with subtle notes of black currant in both aroma and flavour, complemented by aromas of cherries, sour cherries, tobacco and fruit jam. The wine is optimally served with meat dishes with well-seasoned sauces, with dark or smoked meats, and with rich and hard cheeses.
