In Litomyšl, you can relive a lot of stories, just choose the century and the historical figure with whom you want to meet. Imagine awakening in the 18th century, at breakfast you encounter the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, who has just spent a night here and is now musing about some of his other reforms over morning tea. If you find yourself in the nineteenth century, you will probably go together with local girls to drink the fresh healing waters before breakfast, as dictated by contemporary social fashion. If you were transferred to 1995 and were having a beer in the restaurant U Černého orla (The Black Eagle), you could catch a glimpse of the Spanish King himself, Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia at the next table.

The royal couple was inspired to visit Litomyšl on account of the interest of Queen Sofia in the life and work of the eminent Czech composer and native of Litomyšl Bedřich Smetana.

Litomyšl has attracted celebrities and artists for centuries. If you go to Litomyšl today, you are surrounded by muses in all of their forms. Come face to face with one of the greatest works of the contemporary Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek. In his sculptures the strong experience of meeting with antiquity, its mythology and the ideals of humanity as well as the noble mission of art are still reflected.
Walk into the mystical Portmoneum - the Museum of Josef Váchal, a picturesque world of paintings and shapes, where you will meet the mythical monsters and demons and angels that filled the mind and soul of its creator. Then you can please your taste buds with the Gastronomic festival of Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová - a legend of Czech cuisine that elevated cooking to an expression of national pride. Whatever your secret wishes and desires may be, Litomyšl is able to fulfill them. A classic spa refreshes the body, while the magic of Litomyšl uplifts the spirit.

Interesting thing

The culinary surprises of Litomyšl are far from over with Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová and her culinary arts. Do you know the movie Chocolate with Juliette Binoche? The mysterious Vivianne in it can guess the hidden human passions and after her chocolate "treats" local residents shed their inhibitions and give in to their hitherto rejected temptations. And how does this relate to Litomyšl? A similar story is perhaps going on right now in a small shop on Litomyšl square. A few years ago it was opened by a charming owner, whose hand-molded pralines of the best kinds of chocolate from around the world have become a famous local specialty. Stop by there during your visit to Litomyšl and perhaps that small stop will change your life as well.

No matter where you come from, your spiritual journey begins at the square Smetanovo náměstí, in the heart of historic Litomyšl. Here you can admire the splendid Renaissance Knights' House, a medieval tower of the Old Town Hall with its own Art Nouveau astronomical clock, a sgraffito decorated building, in which Paseka bookstore is located and the whole preserved square with historic arcades. From there you can go to the square Toulovcovo náměstí, a modest space, around which the first urban settlements were once formed. In the vicinity you can then draw the air of Monastery gardens into your lungs and evaluate the original sculptures of Olbram Zoubek, surrounding the local fountain. In addition to the murmur of water you will also hear the faint sound of music, which is inextricably linked with the city. Before you head to the castle, the mystical Portmoneum - the Museum of Josef Váchal awaits you, whose interior is decorated with amazing paintings and carvings of this artist and mystic. If fine art is your passion, do not miss visiting one of the many private galleries that you will meet along your route. But it'll almost be time to get refreshed in one of the local restaurants before the afternoon program. The undoubted highlight of the walks along the spirit of the spa colonnade will be a visit to one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Central Europe, with a unique decor and interior design. A visit to the castle cellar, where you can admire a permanent exhibition of the sculptures of Olbram Zoubek as well as the taste, smell and sparkle of the wines stored there, will also certainly be notable. The wine tasting will be a well deserved reward after a day full of sensations, but also encouragement to further explore the beauty of Litomyšl.

Sculptures by Olbram Zoubek in Litomyšl Chateau

One of the most intriguing places in the Renaissance castle in Litomyšl is the extensive cellars, which were opened to the public only in the 1990s. Here you will see an exhibition of sculptures by the famous sculptor Olbram Zoubek, who along with other artists was employed during the communist period to restore the sgraffito decorations on the castle.
