Lednice-Valtice Complex - The garden of Europe on bike

Because of its beauty, the Lednice-Valtice complex is known as the “Garden of Europe”. In addition to the magnificent chateaux of the Liechtenstein family in Lednice and Valtice, there are also a number of romantic buildings, lovely natural nooks and glittering ponds. One of the largest man-made landscapes in the world, this complex is unique and is deservedly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Title
The spectacular Lednice-Valtice complex, spreading out across the towns of Valtice, Lednice and Břeclav, will thoroughly engage your imagination. The Lednice Chateau, where the European aristocracy once gathered to enjoy summertime leisure, will transport you back to Old England. The splendid Baroque chateau in Valtice, which gained fame for its tradition of producing fine wine, was the Moravian seat of the powerful Liechtenstein family. Between these two architectural monuments stretches an expansive and beautiful park with ponds, rare species of trees, forests and blossoming meadows. Set within this landscape like jewels are romantic buildings which offer visitors an extraordinary experience, relaxation and edification. You can climb the Minaret and admire the Colonnade, a triumphal arch, the Neoclassical Apollo's Temple and the romantic ruin called John’s Castle.

Interesting thing

It is said that an early forefather of the powerful House of Liechtenstein was a poor miner who earned his living digging ore in an underground shaft. But he did not lament. He worked hard, was honourable, and hoped that the future would perhaps be a little brighter. One day a sprite appeared to him in the mineshaft. She smiled at him and said, “I and the others have been watching your work for a long time and we think you deserve to be rewarded. Dig here.” Before the miner could say anything, she vanished like vapour. The miner followed her instructions and after a few strikes of his pickaxe a beautiful stone glinted at his feet like a shining star. It was a precious gemstone. What to do with it? He thought it best to hand it over to his princely overlord. The prince marvelled at the miner’s honesty, and when he learned of the meagre conditions in which the miner lived the prince gave him the gemstone and also a piece of land from which he could earn a living as a free man. Lifted from poverty and worry, the former miner lived happily and contented on his farmstead with his large family. When he was eventually elevated to a nobleman, he adopted the name Liechtenstein (Licht = light, Stein = stone) so that his descendants would always remember that their ancestor was a poor man who made his living through honest labour.

The 35-km, mostly flat route through the world-renowned Lednice-Valtice complex takes you past romantic buildings sensitively located in the “Gardens of Europe” between the towns of Lednice and Valtice. You ride along gentle terrain among forests and meadows, leaving you enough time and energy to admire the architectural gems from the early 19th century. You start at the Lednice Chateau, riding around the chateau pond and past the Minaret lookout tower, then back to the chateau gardens. You can set off on bike to the eastern outskirts of the town, where you connect up with the paved cycle route No. 41, which leads you around the Hunting Lodge and John’s Castle to floodplain forests. You can learn more about this unique ecosystem from information panels along the way, then head to the crossroads of the Valtice Alley. Following the alley (cycle route No. 5045), you go down the road and turn right towards the Mill Pond. Before reaching the Apollo swimming area, however, you exit the road to your left and circle Apollo's Temple and the racecourse at Nový Dvůr then continue on to the Temple of the Three Graces. Then follow a segment of the long-distance cycle route EuroVelo 9, whose gently climbing reinforced path through the forest reliably leads you to another one of the Liechtenstein buildings, the Rendezvous lodge (also known as Diana’s Temple). After a gentle descent to Valtice, relax on the grounds of the chateau, and if you are up to it you can pedal to the Colonnade summerhouse, which offers a beautiful view of Valtice and beyond. For the return journey, follow the Mikulov Wine Trail until you reach Hlohovec. The last segment of the route leads past the elegant building of the Border House and then along a good dirt road (an educational trail) past the Hlohovec and Prostřední ponds. At the railway tracks, turn left and follow the EuroVelo 9 route back to Lednice.

Common Tips

Sample some of the sweet ice or straw wines. Ice wine is made from grapes that are harvested at temperatures of 7 °C or below and remain frozen during processing. Straw wine is made from grapes that have been stored on straw or reed before processing or are hung in a ventilated place for at least three months, during which time they lose a portion of their moisture. These methods greatly intensify the grapes’ natural sugar content.
