Český Krumlov - The city of muses

Even the painter Egon Schiele, student of the famous Gustav Klimt, fell in love with this beautiful town. By the way, art was not his only link to Klimt. They also shared a common inspiration – the young red-haired model Wally Neuzil. But you are going to hear more about Schiele’s muses later on.

Title
In the early 20th century, instead of the buzz of the big city, the famous painter Egon Schiele found his inspiration in the small town of Český Krumlov – in a small house with a garden located on a rock overlooking the valley of the Vltava. The vivacious artist was absolutely fascinated by Český Krumlov and called it the “City on the Blue River”. And he wasn’t the only one – soon his friends came over to visit him. Incidentally, it was also in Český Krumlov that his good-looking sister Gerti found her future husband. Yet the life of the liberal artist and his merry friends was not easy in such a small town. They teased and provoked the locals by their clothing and behaviour as well as their art. Today, a century later, you can come to Schiele’s studio to see contemporary unconventional artists who were given a chance to use the renovated studio and tease the muses once again.

Another important artist whose life and work is inseparable from Český Krumlov is the photographer Josef Seidel. In Český Krumlov, you can still see his studio from 1905 in an Art Nouveau house. When visiting it, you will feel like it was only yesterday that Josef Seidel made his last portrait. There are still folders with addresses of his customers lying around.  Take a peek behind the closed doors of the local studios and enjoy a day full of art in Český Krumlov – a picturesque, inspiring little town in South Bohemia, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Interesting thing

What offended the good people of Český Krumlov so much that Egon Schiele had to leave the town? When the local young beauty Liesl Woitsch posed for Schiele’s painting – all naked in front of a rose bush next to the garden house – there was only one place from which she could be seen. And, by chance, one of her friends from the neighbourhood happened to stand just there at that particular moment. Appalled by what the young Liesl was doing, the girl couldn’t keep it to herself, which gave rise to a huge scandal, forcing Schiele to leave Český Krumlov.

You can start your journey in search of the artistic jewels of the city in the historic Latrán district. A street of the same name will take you to the river and from there, over the bridge, to the main square – Svornosti Square. You will be absolutely carried away by the picturesque little streets with Renaissance and Gothic buildings. If you become hungry, feel free to give in to the temptation of one of the local restaurants. Refreshed, you can now visit the Egon Schiele Art Centre, which is close by. There you can see not only the current exhibition but also the interiors of the studios, where young artists from all of Europe as well as from Asia practice their arts. In Hradební street, you will have a chance to find out that street art is not exclusive to big cities.
You can stay immersed in the artistic atmosphere for a while longer and enjoy a cup of coffee in the local café. If you’re looking forward to seeing Schiele’s studio in the garden house, you will have to be patient – it is located at the end of the next river bend. The second crossing of the Vltava will first lead us to the Seidel Photographic Studio and Museum, where you can have a portrait taken in the style of the period. After that, you can proceed to the promised house of Egon Schiele, surrounded by the green garden full of flowers.
If you prefer a guided tour, use one of the daily thematic tours of the city for groups. We recommend the tours called “Dead Town” or “Egon Schiele and the Shadows of 20th Century”, inspired by the life of this artist.
To top off your impression of the visit, make sure you visit one of the famous evening performances in the unique revolving theatre that take place in the summer season.

Common Tips

How to visit the main monuments of Český Krumlov and save money? Get your “Český Krumlov CARD" and you will be able to enter four unique institutions for free! These include the Egon Schiele Art Centre, Seidel Photographic Studio and Museum, the Castle Museum including the chateau tower and the Regional Museum in Český Krumlov.
If you’re a fan of slightly more “underground” types of art, keep an eye out for disused notice boards in Český Krumlov. Local young artists were the first in the Czech Republic who started to use them as unconventional exhibition space. And these are completely free of charge.

Transportation

Český Krumlov is about 180 km away from Prague. If you want to go by car, the best option is to take the D1 motorway towards Brno and exit to the E55 towards Linz (Exit 21). You will go through Tábor and České Budějovice.
There is no direct train route to Český Krumlov. With a transfer in České Budějovice, the train ride takes about 4 hours. A bus ride (private bus companies) is somewhat shorter.

The Latrán district in Český Krumlov

Latrán is the name of the district as well as the main street that runs through it. It starts at the wooden Lazebnický Bridge and ends at the Budějovická Gate.  The older of the two parts of the contemporary historic centre used to lie outside of the centre. It was not exactly a district inhabited by the nobility – the houses of Latrán were mostly home to the castle servants.

Nestled beside the splendid Baroque theatre at the chateau in Český Krumlov is yet another surprise: an open-air theatre with a rotating stage, situated in the middle of the grounds of the chateau, not far from the Bellarie Rococo summer palace, which serves a backdrop to the auditorium. The idea to utilise the summer palace and surrounding park for an open-air stage originated in 1958 with artists from the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice.
