チェコ共和国に現存する多くの聖地や遺跡は、チェコの文化的建築遺産の中でもとりわけ重要なものとされています。教会、修道院、礼拝堂、聖地など、その多くがローマ・カトリックのものですが、ユダヤ系の名所も数多く残されています。宗教建築は1000年以上も発展を続けてきました。キリスト教がボヘミアに入ってきたのは、大モラヴィア帝国にキリルとメトディウスがやってきた9世紀になります。その後、キリスト教はボジヴォイ王と、その妻ルドミラによって採用されることとなり、当時の君主たちによって最初の教会が建てられると、徐々にモラヴィアとボヘミアに修道会が入り始めるようになり、文化と教育の中心としての修道院が初めて造られました。カトリック教会を崇める宗派は、フス派の宗教改革によって勢力を失います。
